Fall Into Autumn
by Dorothy Thompson, aka doranne
As a member of the MS community, I have often noticed a peculiar trend that I wish to undermine. I mean, do people recognize how it sounds to us of the unstable (physically) way of life?
I refer to, of course, the naming of the season that comes between summer and winter, from September to December. I declare to everyone, “This is autumn!”
Is there anything more intimidating to someone with a balance problem than to find out it is the “fall season?” Is it something like duck season, or deer hunting season?
The advertisements on TV and in the newspapers remind us that we must get our “fall wardrobe” together. Well, we all know what that means: helmet, elbow pads, knee pads.
Now here is another interesting thought: a “fall festival.” What does that mean? For some I know it brings on the thought of hot apple pie, its scent wafting through the air. Maybe it’s a hay ride in the moonlight. I do hope it’s not a contest like the World Series—or “Fall Classic” as it has been called. Will there be judges to rate our embarrassing mishaps? Or maybe the viewers will vote, and someone will win the title of America’s “Fallen Idol.”
Please, dear friends and family, and anyone else, keep this in mind:
The colors of autumn are gold and orange and red.
The colors of fall are black and blue.
Which would you rather call it?
